Information about the itinerary:Book your seat for the Andalusia Escorted Tour

We invite you to experience a wonderful excursion accompanied by official tourist guides who explain the history of these two beautiful cities, their monuments, characteristics and traditions, travelling by modern, fully air-conditioned coach.

Departure from our terminal with destination Avila. Its great Romanesque wall of the 11th century surrounds the old town and guards a large part of its monumental treasure… more than a simple town, it looks like a castle. It counts with numerous Romanesque churches, gothic palaces and a fortified cathedral of the 12th century. Santa Teresa de Jesus was born here, the great mystic of the Catholic Church. We will make a stop on the hill of “Los Cuatro Postes” to admire one of the most beautiful views of the city. During our guided tour we can highlight the visit of the Cathedral (from the outside), the Basilica of San Vicente and Santa Teresa Convent.

We will continue our trip to Segovia. It was an important military centre during the Roman period, proof of which the construction of its magnificent Aqueduct. Segovia, chosen by some Castilian Kings for their residence, preserves one of the most remarkable medieval complexes of Spain. Upon arrival, you’ll enjoy some free time for lunch (see tour options). After that we will visit the Cathedral (the last gothic cathedral built in Spain, and considered, because of its elegance, “The Lady of the Spanish Cathedrals”) and also the Alcazar (the most spectacular castle of the country) with its recent Museum of Artillery. Return to Madrid and the end of our service.

    Included in our prices:

    - Travelers insurance
    - Round trip bus transportation from Madrid
    - Panoramic tour by bus
    - Guided walking tour through the old town of Avila and Segovia
    - Entrance tickets to the monuments
    - Accompanying guide throughout the trip
    - * Lunch if requested

    * Pepe Tours reserves the right to alter and modify the itinerary and the order of the excursions for organizational reasons. You may choose between 3 options:
    1. Excursion to Avila and Segovia without lunch.
    2. Excursion to Avila and Segovia with tourist lunch.
    3. Excursion to Avila and Segovia with gastronomic lunch.

    More information:

Avila was declared World Heritage in 1985 and preserves an historic legacy which is unique worldwide. Its walls of more than 2,5 kilometres converts it into an easily recognizable Castilian and medieval city, the result of coexistence between Jews, Christians and Muslims. The Avila architecture ranges from Gothic to Renaissance, without forgetting Islamic marks through Mudejar. Its facades are characterized by a decentred door with a window or balcony above it. This grouping of houses had to do with lineage, but above all with defensive reasons, that is why they are linked to the city wall. The continuous fighting determined that some of these houses were fortified towards the inside, configuring real fortresses. The most characteristic elements of this Romanesque wall are its 2,5 kilometres of perimeter, 88 towers and 9 gates, two of which must be visited: The Gate of San Vicente and the Gate of Alcazar.

According to Azorin, “Avila is amongst all Spanish towns the most 16th century one”. The town may presume of a rich civil architecture, built between the end of the 15th and the 16th century. For the town it was a period of maximum splendour, and still about 30 houses are preserved that confirm the importance of the nobility. Furthermore, mysticism and spirituality have a leading role, led by the figure of Teresa de Cepeda y Ahumada. There are dozens of cathedrals, churches and palacios worth visiting.

The location of the Cathedral of Avila reminds us of its link with the city wall, determining its fortified character. The construction was started in the Romanesque period, but finally it was constructed according to the gothic parameters, converting Avila in one of the first Castilian towns to explore this style.

Segovia was declared World Heritage in 1985 and has worldwide fame because of its impressive Roman Aqueduct. But in this Leon Castilian town the tourist can also contemplate other historic monuments such as the Gothic Cathedral, the Alcazar, the Tower of San Esteban, the Monastery “del Parral”, the Synagogue of Corpus Christi, just like a great number of small temples in Romanesque style.

The Aqueduct. This is one of the most spectacular legacies the Roman Empire left behind in Spain. A total of 166 arches compose this aqueduct with a length of more than 17 kilometres, which transported water from La Acebeda to the Alcazar, challenging gravity as only the balance of forces maintains this structure that dispenses with mortar. Legend has it that it was the devil who constructed the aqueduct in only one night in order to obtain the soul of a young girl who had thus tempted him: “I offer you my soul if you can have water reach my house before a rooster crows”

The Cathedral. The apse of this temple, whose construction started in 1525, frames the Plaza Mayor and marks the limit with the Old Jewish Quarter. Inside the stand glass windows of the 16th century stand out, as well as the Main Altarpiece designed by Sabatini.

The Alcazar. The splendid views of El Pinarillo (with the Jewish cemetery), Zamarramala and the Vera Cruz church are a more than sufficient reason to visit the old fortress, converted in royal residence since the 13th century. A deep moat with drawbridge gives entrance to this fortress, from whose turret Alfonso X studied the firmament. On its left, the Casa de la Quimica, built in the period of Illustration and centre of investigation of Louis Proust.Book your seat for the Andalusia Escorted Tour

Information about the itinerary:Reserve your seats to the daytrip to Escorial from Madrid

A half-day excursion accompanied by official tourist guides who explain the history of the town, the monuments, the characteristics and traditions, travelling by modern, fully air-conditioned coach. Departure from our terminal with destination the Monastery of El Escorial. For many years it was considered to be the 8th Wonder of the World. It was conceived by Philip II as Monastery and Royal Pantheon, and later it became the symbol of the greatness of the Spanish Empire. We will visit the Royal Palace, the Pantheon of the Kings, Chapter Houses and Basilica, the Museum of Architecture, the Room of the Battles and Library. Then we will continue our excursion and we will visit the Basilica del Valle de los Caidos. Situated at only 8 kilometres from El Escorial, it is a great Basilica excavated in the mountain at a height of 1.350 meters above sea-level.  Its construction and its cross of 150 meters high stand out in the landscape of the Mountains around Madrid. We will visit the Basilica (whenever the conditions and programmed official acts allow us) and there will be some time at leisure to enjoy the beautiful views and to make pictures. Return to Madrid and the end of our service.

    Included in our prices:

    - Travel-insurance
    - Transport by coach
    - Accompanying guide during the whole excursion
    - Entrance-tickets to the monuments

    More information:

Monastery and Real Sitio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial

El Escorial was the political centre of the Empire of Philip II, where he built his palace, his library, his pantheon, the one of his parents (Charles V and Elizabeth of Portugal) and of the members of his family and his successors as well as a great basilica and where he founded a monastery. The architectural complex (which was finished in 1562) is situated at about 50 kilometres from the capital, in the Sierra de Guadarrama, and was declared World Heritage in 1984.

Philip II governed the Empire where the sun never set from this little place in the mountains. Affected by the death of his father Charles V in 1558 and with the purpose to affirm the House of Austria in Spain, he ordered the construction of the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial to guarantee the everlasting memory of his family, and he founded a dynastic Pantheon, and  to compensate the destruction of a church dedicated to San Lorenzo during the battle of San Quintin, in France.

The complex, oriented towards Abantos and with a facade of 207 meters long, is situated within a rectangle of 33.000 square meters, its base having the structure of a reversed grid. The main facade receives the visitor with its imposing construction, giving way to the Patio of the Kings, which receives its name because of the statues of the Kings of Juda that adorn the facade of the Basilica.  This is exactly one of the parts within the architectural complex that must be visited. The Basilica is of a square base and crowned by a cupula which is inspired by the Saint Peter of the Vatican, and has a total of 43 altars and chapels.

The Royal Pantheons are situated underneath the Royal Chapel of the Basilica; 26 tombs of black marble which contain the rests of the kings of the Houses of Austria and Bourbon, and the Pantheon of the Infants with the tombs of the queens who died without coronated offspring, princes and infants.

The Museum of Architecture is situated in the Vaulted Floor in the basement of the Monastery, with reproductions of the plans used for its construction, tools which were used and the cost of the construction; also, the Gallery with works of El Greco, Zurbaran, Ribera, Tintoretto, Tiziano, Rubens or Verones.

Benedictine Abbey of the Holy Cross of the Valley of the Fallen (Abadia Benedictina de la Santa Cruz del Valle de los Caidos)

The Benedictine Abbey of the Holy Cross of the Valley of the Fallen is situated in the Sierra de Guadarrama at only 8 kilometres from El Escorial. This colossal construction formed by the Abbey and other buildings like the library or the hospederia is situated on an esplanade of 30.600 square meters, together with the crypt excavated into the mountain and an immense cross of 150 meters high, which can be reached by a hidden funic.Reserve your seats to the daytrip to Escorial from Madrid

    More information:

The town of Aranjuez is a splendid fusion of architecture and nature where the Royal Palace and historic gardens like El Principe or La Isla blend with tree lined avenues, orchards and groves, is situated in the south of the region of Madrid. For centuries the Spanish kings spent the spring in the Palace of Aranjuez, due to its location in a fresh and fertile meadow formed by the confluence of the rivers Jarama and Tagus. This cultural landscape was recognized as World Heritage by the UNESCO in 2001.

Royal Palace of Aranjuez. Philip II, endorsing an old project of his father, Emperor Charles V, commands in 1561 the substitution of the old master residence of Aranjuez for a new building, the antecedent of the actual Royal Palace. In 1715 Philip V continues the work and builds the whole structure of the actual palace. Between 1660 and 1665 it suffers great fires and Ferdinand VI orders the reconstruction. In times of Charles III two side wings were added, that form the western body of the building and reflect the frenchified taste. In its decoration Rococo, Elizabethan, Chinoiserie and Arab motives are combined.

The Old Town. The Old Town of Aranjuez has been declared Conjunto Historico-Artistico (Historic-Artistic Complex) since it is a singular sample of baroque urbanism. Designed in 1747 by Giacomo Bonavia, as from the start as Villa, it was conceived as a noble place where buildings of dignified constructions found their place. Large houses with patios, domes, little palaces, convents, balconies, squares, wide streets, all a testimony of four centuries of history.

The Gardens. With the same refinement and care with which was built the Royal Palace, the gardens that surround it were drawn, constructed and decorated during two centuries. Following the model of Versailles, they wanted to control nature and convert the gardens in yet another room of the palace. The Garden of “La Isla” counts with a splendid group of trees, large avenues and countless fountains of stone and marble dedicated to persons and scenes of Greek mythology. On the other side we find the Garden of “Parterre” which highlights a great profusion and variety of flowers. The Garden “El Principe”, the largest of all, counts with wide boulevards and a great variety of trees. Down at the end we will find the “Casa del Labrador”, one of the constructions of mayor splendour of the Bourbon dynasty. The Museum of Barges is situated close to the pier, where luxurious barges can be seen, that belonged to Charles IV, Ferdinand VII or Alfonso XII and once navigated along the river Tagus. The abundant natural spaces that form the “Real Sitio” find their climax in the Groves and the Historic Boulevards. The Sea of Ontigola is a rich ecosystem of aquatic birds and lakeside flora. “El Regajal”, considered one of the largest reserves of butterflies, is a natural enclave with interesting botanic and entomologic elements.Book your seat for the Andalusia Escorted Tour

The Imperial City of Toledo, in 1986 recognized as World Heritage by the UNESCO, is situated at only 60 kilometres of the capital of Madrid. At present several relics of the three cultures that lived amongst its walls remain, like the Prime Cathedral, the Mosque “Cristo de la Luz”, the Synagogue “del Transito”, the Alcazar and the celebration of Corpus Christi, one of the most important and popular processions in Spain.

The different people that passed through Toledo have left successively their footprints on the town. The walls for example, that were built by the Romans, were reconstructed and received their actual trace by the Arabs. Many gates can be found, but the gate “de la Bisagra” which carries in its upper part the coat of arms of the Imperial City, is the most representative and gives access to the historic town.

Mosque “Cristo de la Luz” (10th century). The only one of its style that survives of the ten that used to exist in the town. It is situated directly behind the gate of Bisagra, the horse-shoe arches succeed themselves and remember and are based on the Mosque of Cordoba.

Synagogue “del Transito” (14th century). Beautiful walls covered with plasterwork precede a rectangular interior, covered with a beautiful “alfarje” (panelled ceiling). It contains the Sefardi Museum.

The Cathedral. Of gothic style, it was erected between 1226 and 1493 on a west-gothic church, which was constructed during the reign of Recaredo. The sacristy harbours a valuable collection of paintings by El Greco, Lucas Jordan, Van Dijck and Goya. But all dependencies are works of art: from the Chapel of the New Kings to the Chapel of Santiago, along the Choir in Renaissance style, the Mozarabic Chapel or the Chapter House.

House Museum of El Greco. Although a sign indicates the entrance, the painter never lived here, but it does harbour several significant paintings of the artist from Crete, such as the Tears of Saint Peter or The Apostolate.

Alcazar of Toledo. Situated on the highest point of the town, in the Roman period it was a palace and under the Christians it was converted in to the first alcazar with a square base. Under Charles I it suffered an important remodelling. Each façade is of a different style and period: the eastern one is medieval, the western one is Renaissance, the northern one is Plateresque and the southern one is Churrigueresque (a Spanish Baroque style of elaborate sculptural architectural ornament). With the invasion of the French troops and the Spanish Civil War is was destructed, butter after the reconstruction it harbours the Museum of the Army and military units.

A period and a history go together in the handicraft: the swords from Toledo, the ceramics or the “damasquinado”. The production of swords and sables is destined mainly to tourism, although there are orders from different armies in the world. Regarding the damasquinado, this is an Arabian decoration technique, consisting of incrusting silver and gold on less noble but harder materials (iron, bronze, steel, ceramic, porcelain…) and applying this technique on rings, bracelets, brooches, dishes. All the streets are full with workshops and shops dedicated to handicraft which will not remain unobserved by visitors and convert some spaces in little bazaars.Book your seat for the Andalusia Escorted Tour

Belmonte, was the birthplace of Fray Luis de Leon. It is a monumental complex of great interest, declared a town of tourist interest since 1968. One of the most important elements of the monumental complex of Belmonte is its walled enclosure, from the 15th and 16th centuries, which with the walls and gates communicates the town center with the castle; Several sections are preserved in perfect condition and several gates: the Chinchilla is the access to the city; that of Almudi, next to the Posito, that of Monreal or Toledo with a dressing room to the Virgen de la Estrella. But its most emblematic monument is its castle, built on a previous one from 1324, in a transitional Gothic style to Plateresque with Mudejar influence. It was restored by Eugenia de Montijo who used it as a residence.

Also, of great beauty is its complex of the urban area, where the church of the collegiate of San Bartolome stands out, of great dimensions, built in Gothic-Renaissance style. Inside, thirteen chapels, the choir, the sacristy and the chapter house, a large collection of beautiful altarpieces, very interesting grille and endless works of art - sculpture, painting, goldsmith, books and documents - forming a museum of sacred art. It has two exterior doorways, one Gothic and the other Gothic-Renaissance.

Mota del Cuervo, is known touristically as El Balcon de la Mancha (the Mancha’s balcony), is located in the center of Castilla-La Mancha, with an almost equidistant distance to all the provincial capitals of the region (except Guadalajara). It has been an important crossroads since ancient times, between the route that linked Toledo and then Madrid with Eastern Spain and the route between Cuenca and the south. Its most characteristic feature are its seven windmills that are located on the hill at whose feet the town sits; These, together with those of towns such as Campo de Criptana, Consuegra, Puerto Lapice or Alcazar de San Juan among others, give the typical image of Don Quixote’s La Mancha.

El Toboso, is an emblematic town of the Cervantes universe since it was where Don Quixote's love, Dulcinea, lived. The Casa de Dulcinea, in addition to its literary value and being for Tobosinos the old residence of a historic and famous neighbor, Mrs. Ana Martínez Zarco de Morales, who is identified with the Dulcinea del Quijote, is a typically La Mancha workhouse from the 16th century, very well restored and decorated, with a rectangular floor plan and two heights, with a third in the central part as a tower. It has a stately doorway with two coats of arms and its interior is dedicated to a museum of ethnological value and daily use in traditional La Mancha life. The furniture is from the 17th century, contemporary with Don Quixote. In the courtyard we find one of the largest known oil presses in the province of Toledo, with a beam of more than fifteen meters; it also conserves a dovecote and a mill. It has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest with the category of monument.Book your seat for the Andalusia Escorted Tour
