    More information:

Barcelona, capital of Catalonia, is a cosmopolitan Mediterranean city integrating in its urban outline Roman rests, medieval neighbourhoods and the most beautiful examples of Modernism and the avant-garde of the 20th century. Not in vain the UNESCO has declared World heritage some emblematic buildings of the Catalonian architects Antoni Gaudi and Lluis Domenech i Montaner.

Walking along the sidewalks of Barcelona is being surprised all the time. Pedestrian streets in the Old Neighbourhoods, green areas and a splendid maritime facade with modern installations are the reflection of its integrating character. Barcelona has managed to exalt its past without forgetting its commitment to the future. The variety and patrimonial wealth of Barcelona provides numerous tours through its different neighbourhoods.

The Gothic Neighbourhood is formed by the primitive centre which was surrounded by walls in the Roman period. Narrow streets with secluded squares and endearing corners host an abundant sample of gothic constructions both civil and religious. Around the impressive Cathedral of Barcelona medieval palaces arise, sus as the Casa dels Canonges, la Pia Almoina or Casa d’Ardiaca. The Plaça del Rei offers another maze of marvellous buildings such as the Palau Reial Maior, the Chapel Of Santa Agata or the Museum of City History. Meanwhile the Plaça Sant Jaume gathers important institutions such as the Palau of the Generalitat and the Town Hall or Casa de la Ciutat. Not to be forgotten is the Church of la Merce, patroness of Barcelona.

The also medieval neighbourhood “Barrio de la Ribera” is situated next to the Gothic Neighbourhood. Originally it gathered merchants and fishermen but as time went by beautiful littles palaces were built. Some of them have been renovated to house important museums of the city. The Palace of the Marquesses of Llio (Museum of Textile and Costumes), Palau Nadal (Barbier-Muller Museum of pre-Columbian Art) or the Palau Aguilar (Picasso Museum) are some examples. The integrating character of Barcelona makes it possible to move in only a few metres from the Gothic structures of the Church of Santa Maria del Mar to the Modernism of the Palau of Catalonian Music.

The urbanism of the central area of Barcelona was defined at the end of the 19th century with the Eixample (expansion). An extensive grid with large avenues and chamfered angles joined the irregular outline of the old neighbourhoods and the suburbs with the surrounding hills. Here the emerging Catalonian bourgeoisie erected their mansions and little palaces putting in practice the most daring principles of Modernism.

Architects like Gaudi, Domenech i Montaner and Puig i Cadafalch could count on masters of applies arts in order to fill the streets of Barcelona with fantasy. The Park Guell, Palau Guell and the House Mila “La Pedrera” by Gaudi, as well as the Palau of Catalonian Music and the Hospital of San Pau by Domenech i Montaner were declared World Heritage by the UNESCO. The temple of the Sagrada Familia, the House Lleo Morera, the House Amattler or the House Battlo are some of the numerous jewels of Modernism that house the city.

The Rambla, one of the veins of the Old Town that lead to the Mediterranean Sea, is one of the best places to take the pulse of the city. Its different sections take the visitor from the Romanesque church of Santa Ana to the Bird Market and flower stands, passing along beautiful samples of Renaissance and Baroque architecture. The Palau Moja, the church of Betlem or the Hospital of Santa Creu guide us. Other centres of cultural and daily life are the Palau de la Virreina (nowadays an exhibition centre), the Market La Boqueria or the Great Theater Liceu.

Barcelona is a city that looks towards the sea and its maritime façade is a compendium of different artistic styles. Les Drassanes, the old shipyards and seat of the Maritime Museum, and the Llotja of the sea are some examples of medieval port facilities.  Arcaded houses lead to the Park of La Ciutadella, the Olympic Village and the Olympic Port. Beaches, docks, an impressive offer in museums and entertainment (L´Aquàrium, Imax 3D, the viewpoint of Columbus...) convert the harbour of Barcelona in a lively cosmopolitan place full of life.

Some of the modern installations are inherited from the Olympic Games of 1992. A trace which is also perceived at the mountain of Montjuic regarding the monumental works for the Universal Exhibition of 1929. The Castle of Montjuic (Military Museum) dominates this emblematic mountain where jewels of the Barcelona architecture can be found. The Plaza de España, the Fuente Magica, the Palau Nacional (with the medieval background of the National Museum of Art of Catalonia – MNAC) or the Anella Olimpica are some of the most outstanding works. The Estadi Olimpic, the Tower of Calatrava, the Palau d’Esports Sant Jordi and the Pavilion INEFC (National Institute of Physical Education of Catalonia) by Ricardo Bofill are integrated into beautiful gardens.

    Departures: Mon, Wed, Sat.     Time: 8:45 h.      Prices: 55 € / person

    More information:

With its geographical limits at the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees the Costa Brava is the already classical denomination for the coast of the province of Gerona. Apparently, nature, climate and history are wanting to compete in the creation of an environment with a strange attraction, difficult to apprehend, where a leafy vegetation is the counterpoint to blue, green and marine waters. Right up to the edge of the sea, at times hanging from the abrupt cliffs, sometimes near the beaches, it paints green the fine golden sand which is compared with the ochre of the earth in the inland, next to the prominence of the landscape. The 16º Celsius of average temperature per year with moderate rainfall and the 2.500 sun hours per year illuminate the artistic and historic vestiges, which communicate a noteworthy past and are only the visible configuration of a reality which has a hidden side to be discovered. Its 214 kilometres of coast spread out from Blanes to the south, enclosed by the Maresme and the Montseny, and Portbou to the north, at the French border.  Beaches, creeks, cliffs and forests alternate with places of world fame: S’Agaro, Tossa de Mar, Begur, Cadaques and Portlligat.

In the heart of the Costa Brava and situated in an environment of great natural beauty, close to the sea and not far from the mountains, Lloret de Mar is a place to fall in love with. Lloret de Mar has countless monuments of transcendental importance in the history of the village. Worth mentioning is the Mujer Marinera, a beautiful statue of a woman watching the sea, situated at a strategic point of the village. This monument harbours a profound significance for the inhabitants of Lloret de Mar as it remembers them an important part of their past. El MOLL (the Open Museum of Lloret) is an imaginary network which allows the discovery of different places of historical, cultural and natural interest. It is an open space, without walls, which runs along different scenes of the territory and allows us to learn more about the heritage of the village. The Museum of the Sea is the entrance to the MOLL and is situated in a privileged surrounding, next to the seafront and in the middle of the old town of Lloret. The seat of this cultural centre is Can Garriga, a house of Indiano style three storeys high and of great historic and patrimonial value, acquired by the Village Council in 1961. The museum has an important collection of naval models which experts qualify as extraordinary, as well as a collection of objects and materials related to the world of sailing. Both exhibitions contribute to the diffusion of the culture and history of Lloret de Mar. Cliffs, pine forests, little bays and beaches compose the coastal profile of the region of La Selva where Tossa de Mar is situated. The southernmost part of the Costa Brava gives the visitor an incredible offer of history, art and leisure at the seaside of the Mediterranean Sea. Tossa de Mar, situated at the coast of Gerona halfway between the city of Barcelona and the French border, is an old fishermen’s town with a great historical background. Tossa de Mar is like a great outdoor museum. Its prehistorical vestiges give way to a Roman Turissa, and a medieval Turisa and a modern Tossa first of all converted in refuge for artists and intellectuals and then in a generous host for tourists and visitors.

More information: Montserrat – A natural park where they worship the patron saint of Catalonia

In the heart of Catalonia rises a mountain with unique forms and a mass of grey stones, a spectacular massive that harbours on its tops the image of the Virgin of Montserrat, the patron saint of Catalonia. In this natural park full with pine trees and holm oaks and inhabited by squirrels, wild boar and genets amongst other species exist numerous routes and guided visits to know its corners. At its summit the Sanctuary that is dedicated to the Black Madonna, a 12th century carving in Romanesque style of the Virgin, rises majestically.  The architectural complex is formed by various squares and the basilica, originally of the 16th century and reconstructed in the 19th century.

The Black Madonna of Montserrat. The veneration of this Virgin was expanded through Spanish America when the nun Bernat Boil accompanied Christopher Columbus to the New World. It is said that an image of the Virgin of Montserrat appeared in a cave of the mountain. Situated at 20 kilometres northwest of Barcelona, the monastery was founded in the year 1025 by the abbot Oliba, although there is evidence that there was a chapel in the year 888 dedicated to the Mother of God. In the 12th century the Romanesque church was built and in the year 1223 the first children’s choir “Escolania” in Europe was founded. Leo XIII declared the Virgin of Montserrat patroness of Catalonia. Saint Ignatius of Loyola arrived in the year 1500 as pilgrim.

New Audio-visual Area. The new audio-visual area of Montserrat is a space completely reformed that reflects the will of the monastery to respond to and to give content to the visit of thousands of pilgrims and visitors who want to know what is and what means Montserrat. The exhibition revolves around three fundamental elements: the mountain, the monastery and the sanctuary. In its content very relevant aspects stand out, such as the presence since the end of the 12th century of the Holy Image and the singularity of a monastery with almost more than 1000 years of history and a continuous and relevant weight in the spiritual, social and cultural life of a country, as is shown by the editorial Publicacions de l'Abadia de Montserrat, the Museum, the Escolania or, recently, Montserrat Television. Montserrat is shown in all its complexity and wealth through an expository tour which uses different and innovative museum resources, as well as modern audio-visuals, thus leading the visitor into the mountain, the history, the monastery or the sense of monastic life in a very vivid way. The tour comes to an emotive end where the Escolania plays an outstanding role.

Rack Train Montserrat, a spectaculaire voyage. On a 15-minute track and surrounded by the outlines of the mountain, the Rack Train of Montserrat takes you directly in to the centre of the monastery. It offers a privilged view and a spectacular environment.

Gerona, “city of the 4 rivers”

Close to Barcelona and situated between the sea and the mountains Gerona enjoys a privileged location. It has the charm and magic of the great cities, but the cosy essence of the villages. The town preserves an antique medieval neighbourhood which rises through shaded alleys of the “Barrio Viejo” up to the imposing cathedral and meanwhile, on the other side of the river, extends the most modern and organized part of the town. On the banks of the river Onyar the most famous image of Gerona is shown, formed by the colourful homes. The Gothic cathedral of Santa Maria (XI to XVIII centuries) is the most relevant architectural element of Gerona, but not by far the only one. The religious architecture counts on numerous examples, like the Monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants (XIII century), the convents of Sant Domenec (XIII century) and of Sant Josep (XVI-XVII centuries) or the churches of Sant Feliu (XII-XVI centuries), Sant Nicolau (XII century) or Sant Daniel (XI century), amongst others. Also, various samples of civil architecture of different periods are present, like the Arabian baths (XII-XIII century), the house Agullana (XIV-XVII centuries), the old palace of Caramany (XVI-XVIII centuries) or the Modernist house Teixidor (1918). But the attractiveness of Gerona is not only limited to history or architecture. The Park of the Devesa is one of the most pleasant urban green areas of Catalonia.

Figueres, the cradle of Salvador Dali

Figueres, capital of the region of the Alt Emporda, covers a floodplain situated within the province of Gerona. The town with deep Catalonian roots and known to be the birthplace of Salvador Dali offers the visitor the possibility to visit the Theatre-Museum Dali, dedicated to the great surrealist painter. Without question one of the historic milestones that has marked the personality of the town was the birth of Salvador Dali. The Theatre-Museum Dali, situated in the old municipal theatre, converts itself into one of the main cultural appointments of the town. Designed by the artist himself it has an important exposition which, through numerous works, allows a tour along the course of he who was considered as the master of Surrealism. The premises were enlarged with the Tower Galatea, where the brilliant painter died. The area Dali Jewels includes the thirty-seven jewels of gold and precious stones of the Owen Cheatham collection, two jewels which were made later on, and the 27 drawings and paintings Dali made for the designs between 1941 and 1970. This exposition illustrates perfectly the different stages in his artistic evolution. The two storeys that harbour the collection of jewels have an independent entrance from the museum so that the visit can be done in a separate way.

Figueres also has an important monumental heritage, where its old medieval walls and the castle of Sant Ferran stand out, as well as abundant examples of Modernist and Neoclassic architecture which appear disseminated through the centre of the town.

Would you like to dive into the magic world of Cava? We invite you to get to know Cavas Freixenet.

The company was founded after the union of two families specialized in wines: the Ferrer family, owners of La Freixeneda, existing since the twelfth century, and the Sala family, founders of Casa Sala. When Pedro Ferrer Bosch married Dolores Sala Vive the foundation was settled for the company which was constituted oficially in 1889. When the Spanish wine production dropped at the end of the nineteenth century many companies like Codorniu and Freixenet became interested in the production of cava, starting to bottle sparkling wines from 1914 onwards.

One of the main characteristics of the company resides in its use of publicity. The company distinguished itself for its ads both for the press as well as for television. Since 1977 their spots for television count with the participation of famous Spanish and international personalities and they are broadcasted during Christmas and New Year’s Eve only during the prime-time of the national television stations. They are characterised for having a story line and for their long duration. Also the “bubbles of Freixenet” stand out, young women disguised in golden costumes simulating the sparkling of the cava. Another wellknown character is the “child of Freixenet”, dressed in red carrying a bottle in its arm, since 1920 present in posters and ads of the company.

The cavas of Freixenet are situated in the heart of the region of Penedes, in the town of Sant Sadurni d’Anoia. The guided visits of Freixenet start with a short audiovisual presentation about the history of the family company. Consecutively we visit the old part of the cava which was built in 1922. The Costa de Garraf, at the seaside of the Mediterranean Sea, and the nearby mountains, provide the region with beatiful natural landscapes. The Costa de Garraf, the southern coastline of Barcelona is mostly represented by the town of Sitges. Other places of interest in the town are the Casa de la Vila, a neo-gothic building from the nineteenth century, and the Palau Maricel, where Medieval, Renaissance and Baroc elements are brought together. The modernist aesthetic of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century also has arrived at Sitges with beautiful architectural samples such as the house-workshop El Cau Ferrat of the writer and painter Santiago Rusiñol. This artist settled himself in Sitges in 1891 and made of this catalonian town a meeting point of intelectuals and artists, giving it a bohemian atmosphere which is still preserved at present.
