The company was founded after the union of two families specialized in wines: the Ferrer family, owners of La Freixeneda, existing since the twelfth century, and the Sala family, founders of Casa Sala. When Pedro Ferrer Bosch married Dolores Sala Vive the foundation was settled for the company which was constituted officially in 1889. When the Spanish wine production dropped at the end of the nineteenth century many companies like Codorniu and Freixenet became interested in the production of cava, starting to bottle sparkling wines from 1914 onwards.

One of the main characteristics of the company resides in its use of publicity. The company distinguished itself for its ads both for the press as well as for television. Since 1977 their spots for television count with the participation of famous Spanish and international personalities and they are broadcasted during Christmas and New Year’s Eve only during the prime-time of the national television stations. They are characterised for having a story line and for their long duration. Also, the “bubbles of Freixenet” stand out, young women disguised in golden costumes simulating the sparkling of the cava. Another well-known character is the “child of Freixenet”, dressed in red carrying a bottle in its arm, since 1920 present in posters and ads of the company.

Sitges

The situation between the sea and the mountains of the Barcelona town of Sitges offers the visitor a multitude of recreational opportunities. The Costa de Garraf, at the seaside of the Mediterranean Sea, and the nearby mountains, provide the region with beautiful natural landscapes. The Costa de Garraf, the southern coastline of Barcelona is mostly represented by the town of Sitges. In its centre religious buildings such as the churches of Sant Bartomeu and Santa Tecla stand out. Other places of interest in the town are the Casa de la Vila, a neo-gothic building from the nineteenth century, and the Palau Maricel, where Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque elements are brought together. The modernist aesthetic of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century also has arrived at Sitges with beautiful architectural samples such as the house-workshop El Cau Ferrat of the writer and painter Santiago Rusiñol. This artist settled himself in Sitges in 1891 and made of this Catalonian town a meeting point of intellectuals and artists, giving it a bohemian atmosphere, which is still preserved at present.
