More information:

The Highlands are situated to the northeast of Granada, where enormous uplands are laying at more then 1.000 meters above sealevel. Thecentral area is occupied by a large wild region, surrounded by the Sierras of the SagraCastrilBaza and Orce. This is a region of contrasts, with short hot summers and cold winters. In spring we can observe the impressive sight of the melting of the snow, when melting water runs from the mountain tops into the reservoirs of El PortilloSan Clemente and the one of Negratín. This region full of beautiful landscapes has two Natural ParksSierra de Baza and Sierra de Castril.

In 1989 the Sierra de Baza was declared a Natural Park. It has a surface of 52.387 hectacres and mountains over 2.000 meters high, the highest situated at 2.269 meters. The park covers the town areas of BazaCanilesGorDólar and Valle del Zalabí, which belongs to the town ofCharches.

Also in 1989 the Sierra de Castril was declared a Natural Park and it has a surface of 12.696 hectacres. As a result of its rough landscape, in thePark there are no villages to be found. The Park is situated completely within the town area of Castril. The river Castril, which runs from north to south straight through the Park, is full of otters and trout.

Gorafe and its Megalith Park – a voyage through the Neolithic Period…. The Arroyo de Gor is a natural depression which lays in a geografical corridor, which in prehistorical times was frequently used, a border between tribes from east and south Andalusia. The neolithic settlements which were formed here about 5.000 years b.C. constituted a complex civilization with its hierarchy and with an economy based on agriculture and livestock. People lived in houses dug into the mountain-slopes or in stone buildings covered with leaves. The dead were burried in typical constructions, the dolmen. Nowadays there still exist 198 of these dolmens. Gorafe is the village where the largest concentration of these dolmens are of the iberian peninsula, and even of a large part of Europe.

Baza is the hometown of the famous Lady, who adopts the name of the city. It is the most populated town of the Highlands and at the same time the neuralgic center. As a result of its long history, Baza has many arqueological sites as well as many monuments of a large historical value, such as the ibero roman city of Basti and the two necropolises. In one of these necropolises the Lady of Baza was discovered, a statue which dates back to the fourth century b.C. The Plaza Mayor of Baza, the city square, for a long time was the center for many activities, visited by hundreds of ‘bastetanos’. Next to the square, the immense church Ex-Colegiata Concatedral, known by the name La Mayor, with a bell tower of 48 meters high. This church has been built on the same spot where the great mosque used to be. With its construction was started in the sixtienth century, after the last of a series of earthquakes that ruined the last restauration. At the Plaza Mayor square we can also find the Municipal Museum. The ouse where the museum is located, was built between 1530 and 1590. The entrance is through a porch with half pointed arches and columns, and flanked by several canons that were used during the siege of Baza by the Catholic Kings. A large amount of arqueological objects from prehistorical times and from the history of Baza are exhibited, as well as a reproduction of the Lady of Baza, the banner of the Catholic Kings, silver weaponry and a collection of documents and archives from different periods.
