More information:

Nerja, located in the eastern part of the Costa del Sol, has all the ingredients to make a visit attractive. The average year temperature, around 20 degrees Celsius, the beautiful mountains of La Axarquia, as well as the steep coast where cliffs and beaches alternate, are some of the attractions. The Old Town   holds splendid witnesses of the popular architecture, with beautiful avenues and emblematic corners such as theBalcony of Europe, a marvelous viewpoint over the sea. Amongst the monuments it is worth mentioning the little church of Nuestra Señora de Las Angustias, patron saint of the village. It was built in the 16th century and is well known because of the ceiling paintings that embellish the dome.

The region has been habitated since prehistory, as the rockpaintings reveal which were discovered in the famous Caves of Nerja, known as the “Prehistoric Cathedral”. The Caves of Nerja, discovered in 1959, are one of the most important touristic attractions of the village. The caves, which were declared Artistic Historic Monument, possess around 2 kilometers of galeries which can be visited by the public. Here we can admire surprising geologic formations which were formed through a slow development that took place over the centuries. High arches and large rooms decorated with columns, stalactites and stalacmites ensure that the whole is known as the “Prehistoric Cathedral”. The Room of the Waterfall, called this way because of the special form a group of stalactites has made, is the priviliged stage where the Festival Cueva de Nerja takes place, which for the last three decades has brought together prestigious figures of music, dance and theatre.

The caves are also of archeological interest, as the possess a collection of rockpaintings which are attributes to the Paleollithicum and rests have been found from other periods, such as the Epipaleolithicum or the Neolithicum. In the Room of the Hall an interesting exposition on ceramics, tools and paintings that were found here, can be seen.
